How Traditional Martial Arts Instructors And Even Boxing Coaches Are Lying To You About Self Defence.

Learn the Forgotten Secrets of Bare-Knuckle Prizefighters.

I first discovered martial arts as a small child when my dad let me watch Enter the Dragon. I was about 7 years old and I was instantly smitten. It took years for me to persuade my parents to let me start training, but eventually they gave in and a lifelong obsession was born. I loved it.

The first art I found was Shotokan karate and I was literally obsessed with it. I lived and breathed karate and I bought into it in a big way. I was convinced that there was something mystical about this fighting art, and that if only I learned enough Japanese terminology and stood in a low kiba dachi (horse stance) for long enough I would turn a corner and be as good as Bruce Lee was in that film I now knew by heart.

But even then, during the depths of my obsession with oriental fighting systems, I knew there was something not quite right. I knew my punches weren’t that hard, but I figured it was my fault. If I stuck at it they would be. I couldn’t quite believe that all those moves in the kata I spent countless hours practicing again and again were really teaching me how to fight in a subliminal way. That if I did them enough, and got them quite right I would be one with the ancient Samurai of Feudal Japan.

Then one day, through a chance encounter, I discovered the existence of English Martial Arts. I started reading old books, and newspaper cuttings, and they made sense. The techniques they described worked. I found techniques that mirrored things I’d been doing in those kata, things that no-one had ever been able to satisfactorily explain to me. I found a fighting art from England, that was not only the equal of anything from the far east, but that actually taught me more about Karate than most of the people I’d trained under.

I dragged my mates out into the park and got them to train with me. All of a sudden I was hitting harder than I ever had before. I was faster, I was stronger, and I got hit back a lot less. I learned how to control distance, and what to do when I got close. I learned things with cool names like “the chopper”, “the cross buttock” and “the hanging trippet”

I’d discovered the forgotten art of Classical Pugilism, and I loved it!

In this book I detail all the things I discovered. All the forgotten techniques and underpinning principles that make this amazing combat system so effective. That allowed Daniel Mendoza, a middleweight at best, to dominate fight after fight against anyone and everyone who tried to beat him. That allowed him to claim the bareknuckle championship of the world for years.

Classical Pugilism - What Every Martial Artist Should Know

What People Have Said...

“In ‘What Every Martial Artist Should Know’ Martin Austwick provides a great historical and practical introduction to the world of classical pugilism. The reader is introduced to the fundamental techniques of bare knuckle fighting and shown how they differ from modern striking arts that use gloves. Furthermore Martin goes into biomechanical details about why certain strikes and target areas provide the foundations to classic pugilism, what protects you whilst doing the most damage to your opponent. All this is presented the in context of self-defence where knowing how to protect yourself effectively using bare knuckle fighting techniques could make all the difference.

Matthew Hanlon – Surrey, UK

“When I received my first e-book from Martin “Oz” Austwick I discovered a neat, effective methodology for studying classical pugilism, with clear explanations and effective drills useful not only for guiding solo or partnered training but also for use as a foundation upon which to build an effective curriculum for study groups or class instruction.

The really clever part is that Oz uses his extensive professional understanding of the human form to make this knowledge applicable to any other unarmed art too, helping those who study martial disciplines from other parts of the world to improve their striking skills as well.

When combined with the interesting notes on pugilism’s historical context that run through the books this provides a fascinating ‘compare and contrast’ approach which serves to establish pugilism as the equal of any other martial art while also broadening the appeal of his work.”
